Deep Cleaning and Maintenance for Your HP LaserJet Printer

If you want to use these solutions periodically to keep your HP LaserJet printer in perfect shape, follow this guide. (Do you have a different type of printer? Check our section on maintenance for all-in-one machines.) Always consult your printer’s manual before starting any procedure.

1. Total Cleaning: Toner Change Routine

Make it a habit to clean your laser printer every time you change the toner, after printing about 2,500 pages, or when print quality issues (like dots or stripes) begin to appear.

Safety Precautions:

  • Unplug the printer and let it cool before servicing.
  • Do not use ammonia-based cleaners on or around your printer.

External and Internal Cleaning:

Area to CleanTool & MethodKey Caution
Exterior CasingCloth dampened with water.Do not allow moisture to drip inside the printer.
Interior CavityDry, lint-free cloth and lens tissues.Do not use a computer vacuum; it can cause damage.
Print Cartridge AreaDry, lint-free cloth only.Avoid touching the transfer roller (the black spongy roller underneath the toner cartridge). Oil from your skin can cause print quality problems.
Toner CartridgeRemove cartridge to clean the area, but do not leave it exposed to light to prevent damage.
Toner Spills on ClothingWipe toner with a dry cloth and wash the garment in cold water.Hot water will cause the toner to set into the fabric.

2. Cleaning the Paper Path (Using Transparency or Paper)

This process helps clear the internal path of debris, reducing potential jams and print quality issues.

  1. Load a transparency film into the priority input tray.
  2. Make sure the printer is in the Ready state.
  3. Hold down the Go button for 10 seconds.
  4. The transparency will feed through the printer slowly. All three printer lights will blink until the cleaning process is complete.
  5. Discard the transparency.
    • Tip: If you don’t have transparency film, use standard paper but repeat the procedure two or three times to ensure proper cleaning.

3. Servicing the Pickup Roller

If the printer regularly jams (not admitting paper or feeding more than one sheet at a time), the pickup roller likely needs cleaning or replacement.

A. How to Replace the Pickup Roller

  1. Unplug the power cord from the printer and allow it to cool.
  2. Open the toner cartridge door and remove the toner cartridge.
  3. Locate the pickup roller.
  4. Find the small, loose white tabs on each side of the roller; push them to remove the roller from its slot by rotating the roll forward.
  5. Gently pull the pickup roller upward and outward.
  6. Position the new pickup roller in the front slot.
  7. Rotate the roller backward and upward into the correct position until the white tabs on each side click into place.
  8. Reinstall the toner cartridge and close the door.
  9. Plug the printer back in.

B. How to Clean the Pickup Roller (Instead of Replacing)

  1. Remove the roller following the steps above (Steps 1-5).
  2. Rub the roller with a lint-free cloth moistened with isopropyl alcohol.
  3. Use a separate dry, lint-free cloth to wipe the roller and remove the dirt released by the alcohol.
  4. Let the alcohol dry completely before reinstalling the roller.

⚠️ Extreme Caution: Alcohol is flammable and must be kept away from open flames or heat sources (including the hot fuser element of your laser printer).
